15 September 1999: Sandline speaking engagements and public statements
Over the past two years and in the coming months representatives of Sandline International have been invited to speak at a number of conferences and seminars on the subject of Private Military Companies. Much of the focus of these sessions has been on the role that PMCs can play in international peacekeeping and how to address the issue of regulation and the interface between PMCs and the international community. Executives of the company have been asked to attend and speak at sessions organised by Aberystwyth University, Army War College, ASEAN Shipowners Association, Defence Intelligence Agency, Georgetown University, Heritage Foundation, Hull University, International Alert, International Institute for Strategic Studies, Marine War College, Military Commentators' Circle, National Defence Industrial Association, National War College, Naval War College, Oxford and Cambridge Club, Oxford Union, Pentagon (SOLIC), Princeton University, Social Market Foundation, South African Institute for Strategic Studies, Wilton Park and the World Bank. The company has also been invited to comment on conflict-related issues by numerous television and radio programmes, including UK stations such as BBC television and radio, the BBC World Service, ITV, Channel 4, Sky News and independent radio. In addition, interviews have been given to Australian, Danish, French, German, Italian and South African media and, of course, CNN. Sandline has assisted numerous bodies and individuals with their research into the legitimacy, role and deployment of PMCs around the world. Amongst these have been various academics, analysts and industry watchers as well as organisations such as the Cambridge Review, UK Parliamentary Human Rights Group, the US House of Representatives African Sub-committee and the Swedish Defence Research Establishment. Invitations to participate in conferences and seminars or to input into research studies can be made by emailing Graham Sutherland at gs@sandline.com or Sara Pearson at spearson@thespaway.com or you can contact her by telephone on +44 20 7230 7711.
